Ten minutes after Chris left, Grant made a hasty excuse and disappeared as well. After an hour-long nap, Petra freshened up with a hot shower. Feeling more relaxed and at ease, she sat down at the computer ready to work. Before diving into the intel, she checked the status of Carlos’s flight. It was on time and scheduled to arrive within two hours. Knowing that, she began the tedious process of sorting through the intelligence documents Veronica and Kevin had provided from their operation in Moscow.

To screen the information, Petra first went through a basic elimination process. When the documents were strewn across the surfaces in the living room, including the couch, coffee table, chair, and desk, she categorized them by relevance and category. She removed documents related to Russian economic policy and set them aside. Kevin’s reports on his dealings with Rasskazov focused primarily on policy. She also set aside similar documents provided by Veronica. She would have to compare the two sets of documents to get a full picture of the situation because their reports would be colored by their intentions and perspectives.

In addition to the less-sensitive information that they had gathered, both Veronica and Kevin had provided analytical and tactical reports based on secondary sources that they had access to through their undercover positions. She put those documents into a separate folder, along with data dumps from hacks of Rasskazov’s security systems. Once she had sorted the pieces out, a picture began to emerge.

Economic views: Important factors – IMF and US policy. She jotted notes on her pad and scratched her head. She was still considering how to organize the information in her head when there was a knock at the door. Petra opened the door and Carlos greeted her with a big hug.

“Man, you are a sight for sore eyes, kiddo,” he said.

“I know.” Petra took a step away and surveyed her old friend. “You’ve put on some weight, Anton. Looks like married life agrees with you,” she chuckled. “Help yourself to the mini bar. The Agency’s paying for this room.”

“Only if you’ll join me, Lila.”

Petra smiled at their mutual exchange of code names. When he had first recruited her, he’d introduced himself as Anton. Some months later, she’d finally transitioned to calling him Carlos, but she still enjoyed using his cover as a nickname. “For old times’ sake. Surprise me.”

Carlos removed two cans of tonic water and two single serving bottles of gin from the fridge. “Do you still like gin and tonics?”

“That works.”

He set them on the kitchenette counter and poured out the drinks. “Can you get some ice from the machine down the hall?”

Petra stepped out and returned with a full ice bucket. He plopped a couple of cubes into each glass and they settled down around the coffee table.

Carlos shifted some of the papers to the side to clear a space for himself on the floor. “You’ve been busy.”

“I’ve barely started. I’ve got to sort through, triage, and read all these documents. I could use your help, if you don’t mind.
